Restoring the Earth - this is what it is all about!

Just Imagine…

January 4th, 2010

I produced this with the help of the words from Alan Watson Featherstone’s inspirational vision when he set up the Restore the Earth conference in 2002.  I am sure we can add many more “dreams” like this.  Funnily enough, many of the original ideas have come true - such as restoring parts of the Galapagos land and more.  Enjoy it! Follow Jez @cycleofstupid - cycling to Copenhagen from the UK

December 7th, 2009

imagingashxHi,

On Saturday 5th December, I am going to do possibly the most stupid, painful and brave thing of my life. I am going to attempt to cycle to Copenhagen. This is approximately 1000 miles, or on average 83.3 miles a day, which is almost like running a marathon every day for 12 days.

So why, am I doing this Cycle of Stupid?

Simply, I want to raise awareness about Climate Change and the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change (hence the rather chilly destination and silly time of year to choose a bicycling tour). I think this summit is crucial to ensuring we have a pleasant and profitable climate in our future.

I hope that the stupidity (and/or bravery) of this cycle ride and the amount of pain and hardship i will go through, is such that it will encourage you to spend ten minutes reading / learning about Climate Change. And that that knowledge will inspire you to take action.

If my journey can buy ten minutes of your time then please follow a couple of the links below (start at the top and see how you go);

1. http://royalsociety.org/Climate-Science-Statement/ for their latest communication on Climate Change. 4 mins.

2. Watch this video which explains the role of Carbon Dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8386319.stm
3mins

3. To understand why this is so important please read the latest climate predictions at http://www.copenhagendiagnosis.org/executive_summary.html
4 mins.

Wow, if you have got this far I thank you. Carry on and I’ll buy you a drink if you let me know…

I hope that some of the above will spur you to take action. What that action should be I’ll leave for you to decide but here are a few suggestions.

Join the Wave; http://the-wave.org.uk/ family fun and great tune…

or decrease your footprint by signing up to http://www.1010uk.org/ 2 mins.

or increase your handprint at http://www.restore-earth.org/ 2mins

But most of all talk to your friends, family and others about Climate Change and let your elected representatives know that you want action.

With Love and Thanks,

Jez

P.S. If Climate Change is not for you but you feel like supporting my ride, but can spare some cash please donate to Enham Alamein at http://www.justgiving.com/JezHunter-Cycle-of-Stupid .

Coral Reef Handprint

September 24th, 2009

Have you visited Florida recently?  Please help below:  This is just come in from www.reef-rescue.org

We are asking for your help again - with another letter writing email campaign. This time aimed at the Town of Palm Beach.

As most of you may know Staghorn coral was added to the Endangered Species List in 2006. An aspect of the listing was for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to establish an area of Critical Habitat, necessary for the survival of the species. NMFS did that and proposed an area in Florida to include all suitable reef habitats from the Dry Tortugas to the northern end of Palm Beach County. The wealthy Town of Palm Beach objected to having the reefs offshore of the town included in the habitat protection area. In November 2008, NMFS issued the final critical habitat designation and excluded the reefs offshore of Palm Beach, eliminating half of Palm Beach County from the protected area.

Clean up UK beaches

September 24th, 2009

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) organises Beachwatch, a UK nation-wide beach clean-up and litter survey. (source: www.greenvoice.com)

How you can help

MCS Beachwatch takes place once every year, always on the third weekend of September to coincide with the International Coastal Clean (ICC) up - if you want to do just one beach clean and survey in the year, this is the time to do it!

The MCS Beachwatch litter survey and clean-up is a national event that has taken place on the third weekend of September every year since 1993. Thousands of volunteers from around the UK spend just a few hours of the MCS Beachwatch weekend helping to clean up and survey our coastline.

Beating swords to plougshares

September 21st, 2009

The environment is moving from a green issue to a red alert. This has been made clear through the security threats arising from crop failure, flooding and water shortages – and reports by a dozen former generals and admirals in the US, saying that climate change poses a serious threat to America’s national security.

These warnings need to be taken to their logical conclusion. Security issues demand security responses.  And that should mean that the economic – and military - might of the world’s most powerful and wealthy states needs to be harnessed to fight what  Greenpeace  calls “the weather of mass destruction”.

Positive Handprint for the Honey Bees

September 20th, 2009

Positive Handprints for Bees

Currrently there is a lot of  discussion about policy and political solutions to climate change and environmental destruction - mostly talking about the issues and agreeing on very little, I have few hopes for COP15 this December.

The way forward is for the people, like us, to begin the work to restore the Earth - brick by brick, year by year.  We are not saying here that geological structures will be re-designed!  No, its about restoring the life carrying capacity the planet gives us through it’s ecosystem services - clean air, fertile soils, water, pollination, gas regulation etc.

Here is a perfect example of a Positive Handprint - Bee Hives!  Clive and Philly Hedger are an inspiration - they are taking the plight of the honey bee into their own hands.  Here are some pictures sent from them to share to inspire more action.  We need millions of Handprints like this - the work with nature needs to be democratized and given empowerment to act, see the results here - Positive Handprints for the Honey Bees.
