Follow Jez @cycleofstupid - cycling to Copenhagen from the UK

Monday, December 7th, 2009

imagingashxHi,

On Saturday 5th December, I am going to do possibly the most stupid, painful and brave thing of my life. I am going to attempt to cycle to Copenhagen. This is approximately 1000 miles, or on average 83.3 miles a day, which is almost like running a marathon every day for 12 days.

So why, am I doing this Cycle of Stupid?

Simply, I want to raise awareness about Climate Change and the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change (hence the rather chilly destination and silly time of year to choose a bicycling tour). I think this summit is crucial to ensuring we have a pleasant and profitable climate in our future.

I hope that the stupidity (and/or bravery) of this cycle ride and the amount of pain and hardship i will go through, is such that it will encourage you to spend ten minutes reading / learning about Climate Change. And that that knowledge will inspire you to take action.

If my journey can buy ten minutes of your time then please follow a couple of the links below (start at the top and see how you go);

1. http://royalsociety.org/Climate-Science-Statement/ for their latest communication on Climate Change. 4 mins.

2. Watch this video which explains the role of Carbon Dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8386319.stm
3mins

3. To understand why this is so important please read the latest climate predictions at http://www.copenhagendiagnosis.org/executive_summary.html
4 mins.

Wow, if you have got this far I thank you. Carry on and I’ll buy you a drink if you let me know…

I hope that some of the above will spur you to take action. What that action should be I’ll leave for you to decide but here are a few suggestions.

Join the Wave; http://the-wave.org.uk/ family fun and great tune…

or decrease your footprint by signing up to http://www.1010uk.org/ 2 mins.

or increase your handprint at http://www.restore-earth.org/ 2mins

But most of all talk to your friends, family and others about Climate Change and let your elected representatives know that you want action.

With Love and Thanks,

Jez

P.S. If Climate Change is not for you but you feel like supporting my ride, but can spare some cash please donate to Enham Alamein at http://www.justgiving.com/JezHunter-Cycle-of-Stupid .

Beating swords to plougshares

Monday, September 21st, 2009

The environment is moving from a green issue to a red alert. This has been made clear through the security threats arising from crop failure, flooding and water shortages – and reports by a dozen former generals and admirals in the US, saying that climate change poses a serious threat to America’s national security.

These warnings need to be taken to their logical conclusion. Security issues demand security responses.  And that should mean that the economic – and military - might of the world’s most powerful and wealthy states needs to be harnessed to fight what  Greenpeace  calls “the weather of mass destruction”.

I Have a Dream

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

I have a dream:

Together we say: no more carbon dioxide emissions.
Together we declare the end of the age of oil, and the beginning of renewable energy.
We form a pact between all nations to restore the earth and we install the boldest initiative since the Marshall Plan.
We transform the world’s military expenditure and begin to turn swords into ploughshares for real world security, investing in building fertile soils, reforestation and giving universal access to pure water.
We make a binding contract between all nations to begin the work.
We enter the age of restoration.
We start now.

The campaign will be launched at Hyde Park in London end June/beg. July in association with LiveNation, with live acts including Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Blur and more. The Positive Handprint campaign will enable concert goers to sign up to the campaign and pledge their support to taking part in restoration activities around the world or in their local community.
