Hi,

On Saturday 5th December, I am going to do possibly the most stupid, painful and brave thing of my life. I am going to attempt to cycle to Copenhagen. This is approximately 1000 miles, or on average 83.3 miles a day, which is almost like running a marathon every day for 12 days.

So why, am I doing this Cycle of Stupid?

Simply, I want to raise awareness about Climate Change and the Copenhagen Summit on Climate Change (hence the rather chilly destination and silly time of year to choose a bicycling tour). I think this summit is crucial to ensuring we have a pleasant and profitable climate in our future.

I hope that the stupidity (and/or bravery) of this cycle ride and the amount of pain and hardship i will go through, is such that it will encourage you to spend ten minutes reading / learning about Climate Change. And that that knowledge will inspire you to take action.

If my journey can buy ten minutes of your time then please follow a couple of the links below (start at the top and see how you go);

1. http://royalsociety.org/Climate-Science-Statement/ for their latest communication on Climate Change. 4 mins.

2. Watch this video which explains the role of Carbon Dioxide in the earth’s atmosphere. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8386319.stm
3mins

3. To understand why this is so important please read the latest climate predictions at http://www.copenhagendiagnosis.org/executive_summary.html
4 mins.

Wow, if you have got this far I thank you. Carry on and I’ll buy you a drink if you let me know…

I hope that some of the above will spur you to take action. What that action should be I’ll leave for you to decide but here are a few suggestions.

Join the Wave; http://the-wave.org.uk/ family fun and great tune…

or decrease your footprint by signing up to http://www.1010uk.org/ 2 mins.

or increase your handprint at http://www.restore-earth.org/ 2mins

But most of all talk to your friends, family and others about Climate Change and let your elected representatives know that you want action.

With Love and Thanks,

Jez

P.S. If Climate Change is not for you but you feel like supporting my ride, but can spare some cash please donate to Enham Alamein at http://www.justgiving.com/JezHunter-Cycle-of-Stupid .

P.P.S. Follow my progress on Twitter - ‘cycleofstupid’ or http://twitter.com/cycleofstupid or my blog at http://cycleofstupid.wordpress.com/

Have you visited Florida recently? Please help below: This is just come in from www.reef-rescue.org

We are asking for your help again - with another letter writing email campaign. This time aimed at the Town of Palm Beach.

As most of you may know Staghorn coral was added to the Endangered Species List in 2006. An aspect of the listing was for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) to establish an area of Critical Habitat, necessary for the survival of the species. NMFS did that and proposed an area in Florida to include all suitable reef habitats from the Dry Tortugas to the northern end of Palm Beach County. The wealthy Town of Palm Beach objected to having the reefs offshore of the town included in the habitat protection area. In November 2008, NMFS issued the final critical habitat designation and excluded the reefs offshore of Palm Beach, eliminating half of Palm Beach County from the protected area.

Reef Rescue filed a formal petition with the feds to revise the critical habitat boundary back northward to the Palm Beach Inlet (near where it was originally proposed) to encompass the Staghorn coral growing offshore of the Town of Palm Beach. NMFS accepted the Reef Rescue petition for reevaluation of the habitat boundary. FDEP sent a letter to NMFS supporting the Reef Rescue request and the neighboring City of Lake Worth issued a proclamation supporting the Reef Rescue position. The Town of Palm Beach on the other hand sent a letter to NMFS reiterating that reef protection will interfere with its beach renourishment projects and that the limited number of Staghorn coral off their coast does not warrant habitat protections.

THIS IS WHY WE ARE ASKING FOR YOUR HELP.

In 2006, your emails convinced Delray Beach to stop dumping 14 MGD of partially treated sewage onto the reefs. In 2007, your emails persuaded Lake Worth to withdraw a permit request to discharge 4 MGD of wastewater onto Horseshoe Reef. More emails stopped St. Marys Medical Center from closing the only hyperbaric chamber in the county used to treat decompression sickness. Your emails influenced passage of legislation to close all the south Florida ocean sewage outfalls. And our last email campaign helped move forward the Coral Reef Protection Act.

HERE IS WHAT WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO DO

Email the Town of Palm Beach and ask them to withdraw their objection to the Staghorn coral Critical Habitat Designation for the coral reefs off their shoreline.

CLICK HERE to follow the link to our ACTION ALERT page which is setup for you to send an email. The page also presents more information on the issue and provides links to resource materials.

It does not matter if you are a Florida or US resident or not. We found in the past, some of the most effective emails were sent from tourists who expressed their concern about visiting a town that was not willing to take the responsibility to protect our reefs. Reefs that are a national treasure and coral that is on the federal Endangered Species List.

Please forward this mail to everyone on your email list. We need your support. The Town of Palm Beach exerts a disproportionate amount of influence on Florida and National politics. Politicians do listen, when enough emails are sent.

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) organises Beachwatch, a UK nation-wide beach clean-up and litter survey. (source: www.greenvoice.com)

How you can help

MCS Beachwatch takes place once every year, always on the third weekend of September to coincide with the International Coastal Clean (ICC) up - if you want to do just one beach clean and survey in the year, this is the time to do it!

The MCS Beachwatch litter survey and clean-up is a national event that has taken place on the third weekend of September every year since 1993. Thousands of volunteers from around the UK spend just a few hours of the MCS Beachwatch weekend helping to clean up and survey our coastline.

MCS Beachwatch is the flagship event of the Adopt-a-Beach project. Adopt-a-Beach uses exactly the same method of beach cleaning and surveying as Beachwatch, but the events take place seasonally, 4 times a year. (The majority of Adopt-a-Beach organises carry out their Autumn survey over the MCS Beachwatch weekend)

MCS needs YOUR help to survey and clean as much of the coast as possible during Beachwatch 2008, taking place over the weekend of 20th-21st September. So why not organise a MCS Beachwatch event, get your family, friends and colleagues involved, and make a difference to your local beach!

There are two ways you can get involved - either ‘adopt’ your own beach as a MCS Beachwatch ‘Organiser’, or help at an organised clean-up and survey event as a ‘Volunteer’.

To see what beaches are currently adopted click here. If a beach IS NOT on the list then chances are its available for adoption so you can register as an organiser here

To register as a volunteer you can register here:

http://www.adoptabeach.org.uk/pages/register.php
